Are You Experiencing Perimenopause?

Perimenopause

While it might not be a term you've heard often, it's a phase in every woman's life that's worth understanding. It's that time when your body begins its transition to menopause, and it usually hits between your late 30s and early 50s. If you're experiencing changes that have you wondering if perimenopause might be on the horizon, you're not alone. Let's delve into this transformative phase, its typical age range, and common symptoms, so you can navigate it with confidence and empowerment.

What is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause, often referred to as the "menopause transition," is the period leading up to menopause itself. It can last for several years, and during this time, your ovaries gradually reduce their production of estrogen. This hormonal shift can bring about a variety of changes in your body.

Typical Age Range

While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, perimenopause typically begins in your late 30s or early 40s. When I talked with my doctor, at age 35, about symptoms like mood swings, weight gain and difficulty sleeping during particular times of my cycle and asked if I could be experiencing perimenopause her answer was simple. Yes. You’re in the age range, you’re experiencing it. It can start earlier or later for some women. The duration can vary too; it might last only a few months for some, while others might experience it for a decade or more. Symptoms can come and go. The key takeaway here is that perimenopause isn't a sudden event but a gradual process.

Common Symptoms

1. Irregular Periods: One of the most common signs is changes in your menstrual cycle. Your periods may become irregular—shorter, longer, heavier, or lighter.

2. Hot Flashes: Sudden, intense waves of heat that can lead to sweating and discomfort are a hallmark of perimenopause.

3. Mood Swings: Hormonal fluctuations can impact your mood, causing irritability, anxiety, and even depression.

4. Sleep Disturbances: Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep is another common symptom.

5. Vaginal Changes: You might experience vaginal dryness, itching, or discomfort during intercourse.

6. Changes in Libido: Some women notice a decrease in sexual desire or changes in sexual function.

7. Weight Fluctuations: Hormonal changes can contribute to weight gain, particularly around the abdomen.

8. Memory and Concentration Issues: Some women report forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating.

You're Not Alone

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to know that you're not alone. Perimenopause is a natural part of a woman's life, and millions of women go through it every year. As with many things that connect to aging, our body and hormones however, we tend not to bring this up with many of our supports! The good news is that is changing for the better and you can be an important part of this conversation with the women in your life.

Taking Control

While perimenopause is a natural process, there are steps you can take to make this transition smoother. This includes adopting a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and seeking support when needed. You don't have to go through perimenopause alone; there are resources and experts available to guide you through this phase with confidence.
